Default What I don't understand is....

If you're going to buy a car, you go drive a few until you find what you
like.
If you're buying a piano, you line them up and play them all until you find
what you like.
If you're going to get married, you date someone long enough to know what
you like.

Why don't people do the same with microphones?

I didn't marry my wife because someone said she was good. I had to find out
for myself.

Because the high-priced mikes are not available for loan to low rent
people like you and me.

I resemble that remark

Seriously.....you don't have to get them on loan.
Book some time in a studio. I've done that before just to use gear that I
don't have access to. Especially their microphones.
Then again I'm lucky to live just outside of NYC. Some may not agree.

Oh, I don't know about (part of) that. Just about every mic booth I walk
by has a set of headphones and a barker holding them out to me telling
me to listen to his mic. It's me that says "No thanks - I can't hear
anything useful with all this racket."

Many years ago, I think when Josephson was first getting started selling
mics commercially, he got a room for an evening during the show, brought
in a player or two, and actually made some recordings and played them
back. And several years ago, MXL had an iso booth at a NAMM show, with
Rick Ruskin playing inside so you could listen to a few different mics
on headphones, But you don't see that too much these days.

My friendly local pro audio dealer will let me borrow anything I want,
but my friendly local Guitar Center won't take a mic back "for health
reasons" so they say.

Not MXL but TransAudio. I was in front of a trio of Brauner mics if I
recall.

There was a stereo Brauner and a Soundfield, IIRC. And you sounded
terrific.

Even better! Sorry, Mr. Brauner (and Mr. Ruskin). I remember that
Harvey Gerst was involved in the demo and he was hanging out with the
MXL folks around that time (or maybe a year or two later).
