Anyone know the blue book value for a pair of EV Sentry 100EL's (the powered ones)? Or what a fair price would be? Thanks.

Back in the early 1980s, when my then new passive Sentry 100s had to go back to be fitted with the proper woofers, I was loaned a pair of the ELs. Had them for about a month. I've never heard so many artifacts from an amplifier. Notes and tones were being created and added from what seemed like a very odd distortion spectrum; very gooey and squishy tonality, etc -- it was hard to believe. ("What the hell happened to the tone of the 100s???" was my reaction.) I suspsect a very junior engineer at EV grabbed an app page from a transistor datasheet, poorly built an "amplifier" from the design provided, and bolted it on to the back of the 100s. Powered monitors were a novelty then, I don't think there was much thought given regarding the opportunity for integration. Oh, and don't forget what 30 years has no doubt done to the electrolytics in the power amps. (Speakers are likely full of hum and have no low end.) The only way I'd suggest using the ELs would be to immediately remove the internal amps and reconfigure the monitors for passive use with an external amp. Or, maybe there was a later production run with better amps. Don't know. Just be aware and cautious, and be sure to audition them. Frank Mobile Audio -- |

Frank Mobile Audio Looking at manufacturers' data sheets, the lifetime of a decent electrolytic is about 5,000 hours. You can get more out of it if you run it cool and at low volts and ripple current. But 30 years? Almost certainly dead. d |

I admit I never used the ELs, only the passive ones. But it should be very easy to take a screwdriver and turn the ELs into passive speakers with an external amp. I don't think I'd pay more than $150 or so for a pair of Sentry 100s, but I'd certainly pay $100 or so for them, and I always liked mixing on the things. --scott -- "C'est un Nagra.
