Smooth sailing, Doc, and thank you.

I first heard doc on the Folkways Old Time Music At Clarence
Ashley's record during my first year in college. The Chicago
Folk Festival was during the break between semesters, so in
January 1962, 9 of us piled into a VW microbus and drove
from Washington to Chicago, about 14 hours through the snow
(uphill, both ways) to hear Clarence, Doc, and Fred Price,
the group that Ralph Rinzler recorded. I had only been
playing guitar for about a year and a half then, and thought
Doc was good, but I didn't realize how good he was until
maybe a year later when Ralph started bringing him around to
folk festivals as a soloist.

Through his guitar, his singing, and his stories, he brought
an appreciation for old time music to people who otherwise
never would have heard it.

I saw a good tribute; if I may quote "zolareturns" from somewhere,
which I think obviously applies to the many "discoveries" of Doc
Watson by many thousands of people over the years: "Like checking in
with Moses around the time of the Ten Commandments".
