The Chicago Folk Festival was during the break between semesters, so in January 1962, 9 of us piled into a VW microbus and drove from Washington to Chicago, about 14 hours through the snow (uphill, both ways) to hear Clarence, Doc, and Fred Price, the group that Ralph Rinzler recorded. I had only been playing guitar for about a year and a half then, and thought Doc was good, but I didn't realize how good he was until maybe a year later when Ralph started bringing him around to folk festivals as a soloist. Through his guitar, his singing, and his stories, he brought an appreciation for old time music to people who otherwise never would have heard it. I saw a good tribute; if I may quote "zolareturns" from somewhere, which I think obviously applies to the many "discoveries" of Doc Watson by many thousands of people over the years: "Like checking in with Moses around the time of the Ten Commandments". --D-y |
