Two things:

1. A phono preamp applies a "de-emphasis" EQ curve to the signal, to
compensate for the "pre-emphasis" curve with which LPs are recorded.
Why this is the standard is a long explanation; please just take my
word for it. If you amplify your phono cartridge's output without this
de-emphasis EQ it will have no bass and very exaggerated treble.

ART Pro Audio made this little preamp that I have. It's cheap, and has several different output options including direct digital and USB. It's discontinued but you can find them on Ebay. I got it to digitize alums for friends that no longer have turntables but still have records.
