There are now a whole new class of audio components for exactly this
purpose. Commonly known as music servers or digital music players,
these are regularly reviewed in high-engs mags such as Stereophile and
Absolute Sound.

Prices range from a few hundred dollars for a Logitech Touch to $7500
for the Meridian Sooloos. A Musical Fidelity player M1CLiC got a nice
write up in Stereophile this month.
