The external pair substitutes for the built-in XY mics; the M-S tracks
use the interal ones.

OK, then, that's something that the H2N will do that the H2 won't. With the
H2, it's either the 4 internal mikes or two external ones (or 2-channel line
input from a mixer). You can't (AFAIR) split 'em. (2 external, 2 internal).
