for various reasons I'm out of the loop and my memory about my old
setups has faded, so bear with the noob level of discourse if you will... mrs. me is getting a new Alienware box for her gaming, which means I finally inherit her 8 year old Dell XPS (Core 2 , 1.8 ghz , 200 mhz system bus, I think) , so I'll need to be setting it up for music. I'll be using my ancient Cakewalk , Soundforge, Acid 4 (or whatever) Arp X-8; no heavy , high rez multi tracking , so I'm sure the processing power will be plenty for me, but I'm wondering if there's anything about these boxes I should be aware or wary of , something obvious to your esteemed selves but unknown to moi. I may or may not leave it set up for internet, though there's no real need since I have this here clunker for that . I set up an old Optiplex a few years back, stripped it down to a minimal XP os but then we moved and I haven't had time for music much, so I'm not completely useless , though I'm years behind the technology curve now. No matter, the Dell is old and I'll be using old programs with it . Getting the XPS may light the fire again, so I figured I may as well scoot over here and start the process . muchas gracias for any input, Dar |

Dar, * * *How sure are you that the machine is working perfectly at the present time? Any glitchiness would make Paul's suggested inspection even more important. Bob Morein (310) 237-6511 she crashed it with the new Starcraft and that apparently corrupted the registry , so we had it repaired , and the tech said it's working fine, and has only had one serious issue before (virus) . The thing is a beast , still, by my pedestrian desktop pc standards, probably twice the volume of a run-of-the-mill tower... I love it , and someday I'll have that Alien box.... but back to Earth... ....she played EQ and WoW on it for trillions of hours and surfed endlessly, so I know it's (been) a dependable workhorse.I will def have a look under the hood for those cpas before I implant my old Audiophile soundcard from the Optiplex (which I hardly used . was junk as far as latency ). Funny... I get the used $250 clunker and she gets the pimped -out Alienware , which will work out fine as long as I'm patient . Now that day has come when I inherit her formerly top-shelf box, and get to toss my old junk. Now, if I just had some time to work on music . ....and someday in the distant future I'll be here asking about Alienware ... (and probably somewhere else asking about it when it gets here ) thanks, DS http://www.soundclick.com/darshelton (same stuff as as few years back) |
