Default Magnetic recording disc. Telefunken

A client brought in a format I have never seen before.

It is a magnetic recording disc approximately the size of a 45 rpm
record. probably from the late 50's.

Does anybody out there have the ability to transcribe such a disc?

Any help would be appreciated.

Spray it with Magna-See and see where the tracks are. If it's like the
Dictograph discs, you can put it on a record lathe with a tape head taped
to the cutting head and just let it follow the spiral.

I assume it is similar to the "Pye Discmaker" recordings, in which case
I have the kit to do it.

I am located in Bath, England.

I knew you would!

How does the head follow the track?

In the Pye Discmaker the disc is actually grooved and the playback head
has a thin projection which fits into the flat-bottomed groove and picks
up the magnetic signal. To keep the playback azimuth correct without
manhandling the pickup while it is playing, I use a simple hydraulic
system of two water-filled syringes coupled by a thin flexible pipe.
One of them travels with the pickup and has its plunger coupled to the
azimuth-adjusting linkage, the other is fixed to the pre-amp box and can
be manipulated when the azimuth needs adjustment.

I have other type of machine which uses two discs on one turntable, a
larger one which is made of thin recordable plastic about 12" in
diameter and a smaller one which is thick with a coarse guide scroll
pressed in it. The pickup has a double head with a blunt stylus on the
inner part, which follows the scroll in the inner disc. That controls
the position of the recording head on the outer part of the pickup, so
that it runs in the correct place on the recording disc.

As the original poster describes a record about 7" in diameter, it is
more likely to use the former system. If it is some other system (there
were probably several other variants on the theme) I am prepared to
adapt my playback systems to suit it.
