Default Mixer suggestions? was Loud buzz...

So, after isolating the mixers from each other using a Radial Twin-Iso at
the source end, and connecting the upstairs audio stuff to the downstairs
electrical system, the buzz went away. Mostly, and most of the time.
Sometimes it came back, but it was always quieter than pre-isolation. The
arrival of the buzz did not always coincide with changes to anything else
that I could confirm. The noise level in the upstairs audio was acceptable,
so we lived with it. (FWIW, it's a permanent lighting install, but portable
PA.)

Now, another question. Scott asked if I was using a mixer with a bargain-
basement solid-state output section; he was of course correct, I was
indeed. So now, what do I want for a small mixer?

Ideally, I want 6 mic channels with 3-band EQ, a couple of stereo ins, two
auxes (three would be better), mutes on each channel (that also mute all
the auxes), non-bargain-basement outputs (and inputs, I spoze). Desirable
things include rack-mounting, sweepable mids, solo buttons, linear instead
of rotary level pots. Budget is important, but not all-encompassing,

So, what happens if you move the isolation box to the destination instead of
the source? And are you using the ground lift on the box?

Problem is that these days you have cheap mixers and expensive mixers and
not much in-between. The cheap mixers are so cheap that they have taken
over the mid-priced market. These days it is very hard to find something
on the order of an old Yamaha PM-1000 without paying a lot of money.

That said, the Mackie Onyx stuff has actually been designed with some thought
to RF issues. No transformers (and you will definitely need them on the
outputs), but the inputs at least have common mode chokes on them and
proper pi filters.

Dave, I just checked the previous thread, and saw that one possibility
was not discussed: a loose wire nut, particularly on the neutral.
Enough churches and former churches burn down due to wiring faults
that the question has to be asked: is this church one of those
accidents waiting to happen?

Thanks for the question, Bob. One of the things that the electrician
checked was for loose connections at the entrance and at the panel(s). He
found a couple of slightly loose connections, and tightened them. It didn't
help the buzz, particularly, but it's been at least looked at.

The noise was worse with the isolation box at the destination end. I
tried the ground lift with the iso box at the destination end, it didn't
make an appreciable difference. I left the ground unlifted, mostly
because I was weary of running up and down the dang stairs by the time I
got everything in place :-/

The PM1000 was the first 16 channel mixer I ever worked on. I might be
able to find one, but one necessity that I neglected to mention was
being able to lift the mixer by myself....

Thanks. Is there a mod to make the mute work on the prefade Auxes? And
have they finally sorted out the summing amps to keep them from being
overdriven?

And when you say "expensive mixers", is there such a thing as a small
mixer that fits my requirements? And how expensive is expensive? A
grand? Ten?
