Agreed, and there are better ways.

Mini goosenecks with a spring clamp can help a lot with placement
too, and will definitely reduce the weight and bulk factor of
regular mic stands, but your mics need to be small enough in the
first place for that to work ......

By coincidence, I just picked up a few of these, AT products, very
cheap, and some "drum clamps", that look like they can attach to
instrument cases, etc. What would you hook them to?

IF the performer uses a stand for music, cheat sheets, etc.
USe his stand, another chair, etc. I surmise you'll carry
one tripod stand for your main pair, augment with the spot
mics.
IF the performer does use sr use his mic stand for your spot
mic. I've had a variety of those c clamp and other
attachments that will take a small gooseneck.

Richard webb,

You know, I just thought of something that might help. They make some
display tripod easels that are constructed in segments like tent poles,
or a blind man's cane. Collapsed, they are about 13" long. Shake them
once, and they become a 5' three-legged tripod with clips to display
signs etc.

The trick, of course is that the individual leg segments interlock and
are connected with a piece of bungee cord under tension which snap them
together. There's a hinge piece at the top which makes three of them a
tripod. I've used these for their intended purpose and they are a
time/space saver.

Here's the first one I found online (price is a little ridiculous for
what it is...I've seen 'em cheaper):

Of course, you don't need a tripod, but the basic construction might
spark some idea for fabrication of a lightweight / light duty mic stand.
The tent poles which use the same idea are made of a tubular
fiberglass material, with metal ferrules at each joint....
