---------------------------------------------------------------------------*------------------- John, * * *I'm not working against a sightline problem; in the small venues where I record, visible mikes are OK. I am trying to reduce bulk, so I can take the train to NY instead of driving. While I've got you, what is your opinion of the AT831 sound quality? *As an example of my strategy, I would clip an 803b or an 831 to a self constructed stand, which might be (I'm still thinking) a retractable car aerial attached to a lightweight base. The idea is that weight begets weight, and by using a lighter mike, I can use a lighter stand. * * *I have noticed that in miniature size, cardioids and hypercardioids seem to be more irregular, and have more extreme proximity effect, than standard size small condenser mikes. Hence, my question. Bob Morein (310) 237-6511 Bob, I like AT831's; I've used them clipped to guitars and also as wireless lavs for voice and found them to produce very good sound with no problems that I can recall. The ones I've used over the years have been rugged and dependable. I've never used them at any significant distance from a sound source, so I can't say whether your proposed use of one on an ultra-light stand would work well or not, but I think it's a really cool idea and you should try it, by all means. Please let us know how it goes. You may have invented a new micing technique here. John Frink |
