I guess you didn't read the post where I worked out the geometry of the situation. Executive summary: The area being melted is like two 5 inch squares on the surface of a 100+ foot diameter ball. The claim that a stylus melts the vinyl passing beneath it is just absurd urban legend. Absurd urban legends that get published in refereed scientific journals. It is perpetuated by those who - for some odd reason - are simply driven to distraction by the simple fact that millions of people still enjoy LPs. Yes, that was the motivation back in the 1970s when a lot of this was published. |
