Default MOTU 424 w/ 2408 PC Users?

Yes,
I'm running the 424 with an Aus-P4G8X deluxe. I had issues installing it,
and called MOTU and they were completely worthless in the technical support
area. I figured it out on my own, and it now works beautifully. What
exactly is happening with this unit? Maybe I can help..

Hello,

THE PAST...

I,ve been on the phone with MOTU and emailing them for 3 weeks now.
After all the system configs and tweaks they gave me and 2 bad 424
cards they finally tell me that my ABIT KR7A-Raid MoBo is incompatible
with my new 2408 core system. SO...

THE QUESTIONS...

Has anyone succeeded in setting up a pc DAW with a 424 card?
If so, What make, and model MoBo have you used successfully?
Windows XP or Win 98?

CHEERS,

TOM

There were so many problems I don't know where to start.

The last problems I was having were pops and clicks with no sound in
win media player and sound with pops and clicks using asio driver in
logic. I did change sample buffers to 256 with no change.

Here is a list of some of the errors.

Windows protection error

bios hangup at DMI Pool Data

"error while initializing device IOS Either an iosubsys sub directory
is corrupt, or the system is low on memory"

Audio console unable to see 2408

Blue screen before windows up:
"a fatal exception 00 has occurred......vxd motuaw(01)....

A couple of times the audio and pci audio driver installed by windows
pci able to see and configure 2408, but sound filled
with pops and clicks

After all this I stopped making detailed notes. I was
brain-dead.

There were blue screens exiting the pci console,
freezes, "OD" blue screens. I moved the card into different slots The
Irq# was not shared with any other device.

I just installed a 24 i/o with the 424 card on an ASUS P4PE ( version
without firewire but with LAN and sound....the only thing that was
available) running W2000. I didnt believe my eyes...or ears when it worked,
but dang it, it worked fine. Mind you, the "wizard" software hangs up but
who needs a wizard.
I only wish that my damn MTP AV USB worked so well.

I just built a new system this year with an ASUS P4PE motherboard ( the
version with the Firewire ports ) and it works fine running XP Pro and

MOTU
PCI-424. ( although I've been having annoying issues with an incorrect

clock
rate being selected by SX ) My old system was an ASUS P2B-S and it

worked
with the old PCI-324 card on both Win98 and XP Pro.

Best of luck!

Well,

I went out and bought winXP and still had the same problems.

I've tried all sorts of bios changes and I still can't sound without
pops and clicks. I enabled ch 1+2 ins and outs and I get noise on all
channels and tried all buffer settings in audio console. I believe
I've run out of tweaks.

I will look into the MoBos that have been mentioned here.

What processor and memory did you use.

Graphics card?
(I've been using matrox g550"

How did you set yours up?

None, that were cause by the motherboard. I had an installation issue with
Windows XP. It would not let me install the card for ANYTHING at first. I
eventually (no thanks to MOTU or Windoze tech support) figured out that I
needed to go into my registry and give the drivers permission to be written
to the registry! I big pain in the ass caused by Windows. So, if you end
up needing a motherboard replacement...I can't say enough good things about
the Asus-P4G8X. I don't have any conflicts or problems...it holds 4GB of
memory and a ton of other really great features. I'm also running the
motherboard's onboard Firewire, and Audio...and it has cause absolutely no
problems.

Again, I've had nothing but good experiences with my gear, and I'm using:

Asus-P4G8X Deluxe: Motherboard
P4-3.06Ghz
2GB - Corsair PC2100 memory
GeForce-Ti4200 with 128MB DDR - 8XAGP
All SCSI Hard drives (15,000 RPM - 3.2 sec seek time)
Yamaha CDR/W (cause they have 8MB cache)
Onboard AC97 sound
MOTU 2408MK3

If I'm missing anything that you need, let me know. Sorry you're having so
many problems, I know how frustrating that is!

I've got the 424 working on an Intel P4 using the Asus P4PE motherboard, a
very nice combo. As a matter of fact, I've run 3 different MOTU interfaces
on it without problems... the 2408 Mk III with the 424, the 24i/o with the
424, and also the new 828 Mk II firewire interface.

All work fine. Not sure, but is the KR7A a board for an AMD processor? If
so, that's your problem. I tried 3 mb with AMD (all the "top rated") and
they all had the same problems you are describing. Once I moved to the
Pentium 4 processors, all those problems instantly went away. Some people
say its the VIA chipset that AMD type boards use. But I always kept trying
the latest VIA drivers (they are constantly posting new ones because of the
problems), and it still never worked right.

Good luck, but if you are running AMD, do yourself a favor, dump it and get
a Pentium based board (like the fantastic P4P4) and your problems will
vanish.

What did you have to do in the registry to have the drivers installed.

The procedure if I have to do the same thing.

If it's a newer revision than a KT133A, it **** for recording. After two
mobos that had KT333 chipsets and DDR I ended up scraping it all for a
slightly older K7VTAPro AMD mobo with the KT133A chipset and have had no
problems other than I can't go past an AMD 2100+. To be honest, I don't
need a 2100+ to do my job. I have a 1600+ and it works just fine, even up
to and including 24 tracks of recording/mixing, so to me, if it ain't broke
I'm not going to fix it.

VIA dropped the ball on their development of the KT333 and KT400 chipsets,
obviously forgetting that there are audio people out there that can't
operate if they upgrade to their newest chipset mobos. I'm at the point
where, regardless of whether an AMD can outdo an Intel on flops, I'm going
to be looking at an Intel the next time I upgrade. It's all a circle. I
started with Intel because they were the only game in town, and now it
appears that I'll have to go back to Intel to continue doing the work that I
do when I have greater than usual requirements. I've been such an AMD
proponent that I find this hard to accept, but my work is more important
than my allegiance to a chip manufacturer.
