Default g4 mixdown: mbox or mac 2 channel alt.?

hi....so after the untimely demise of my pc, i'm biting the bullet and
buying a g4. i'll mainly be using it for 2 track mixes and
audio/video editing....and i really only need 2 inputs (but if you can
wow me w/ a four input that's comparably-priced i'll wash your car.).
since i'll only be using this thing for mixing to protools off of an
ms16, my question is---how's the quality of these converters? i've
mixed through an 001 before and felt that it didn't hold up to the
sound of my darla's in a splitting hairs kind of way. as far as i
could tell from the archives...the general consensus is that mbox
converters are 'better' than the 001, ie more accurate, but not by
much. am i going to be getting less than what i'm getting from the
machine or board (allen and heath gs 3000) with them? i won't have
alot of money left over from the purchase of the g4 and want the best
bang for my buck, so any help is appreciated....

If I were you I'd get an Audiomedia III and an outboard a/d converter for
the s/pdif input. That will offer you 4 inputs, though the two line inputs
on the AMIII are somewhat noisy, but might be useable for certain tasks if
the levels are consistently strong. The AMIII goes for around $125 used on
eBay, and outboard units like an M-Audio Duo go for around $250 new.

The Mbox is no better than the 001, they both suck imo.

Software upgrade will also cost about 75 bucks. .

My condolences, on both counts.

I have both -- 001 and Mbox -- and I think the Mbox sounds better. Not
night and day, but better.

Overall I'm really happy with the thing.

it doesnt make any sense to get an mBox with a G4 tower. if you're
getting a G4 get at the least a digi 001 or perhaps a digi 002 rack
(firewire and 96k). an mBox is a waste of the G4's advantages. if all
you can afford is an mBox i would say go with an iBook or a ti book
(they have that nice and cheap 12" screen one now) makes more sense
with an mBox. another cheap alternative with a G4 tower that someone
mentioned is an AM III card. very cheap and it has stereo 24bit spdif
inputs that you can hook up to any number of nice A/D converters.

I don't see how the AMIII with outboard converters is any better deal unless
the converetrs is A/D/D/A.

first off...thanks to all for the feedback thus far. i'm going to be
using the g4 more for video editing and weird layered processing of 2
track material than for multitrack recording, so processing power is
still pretty important to me, if that's what yr referring to w/ 'waste
of g4 advantages.' i may end up with something more elaborate
eventually to do multitracking (i usually just go to tape...), but all
i want right now is decent stereo a/d.
