Hello. I'm after a voice recorder that can connect to a USB port to
transfer the audio recordings. However, I also want a voice recorder that can be powered by the USB port as well, as my present voice recorder is eating up AAA batteries. I found one device that looks promising: http://www.b4udirect.com/index.cfm?c...238130/&bhcp=1 but the price suggests to me it is far more professional then what I am going for (i.e. lecture recordings). Does anyone know of any other products I should look at? Kind Regards, Matt |

Hey Matt,
How are ya? You're right,it is a bit pricey! Try this; http://cgi.ebay.com/Digital-Voice-Re...1%7C240%3A1318 Quick Q, what do you want it for? I mean if it's just for lectures than you should be able to pick something up low end $30. I mean, some MP3 players record voice. You can even get an adapter for your Ipod (presuming you have one). Note, when i say low end i mean it's not broadcast quality. But, it's very clear. |

What USB are you powering it *from*? If you are powering from your notebook computer, then why not use the computer itself to record with? |

I-pods are Satan powered, and I don't mean anything at all about content, attention span deficit, hearing damnage, or societal loss. No, I'm talking about Firmware Ugliness. Yes, friends, right here in River City, (chorus), and that starts with F and that ends with U and that rhymes with fooey. I think that an objective POV of their firmware issues can all too easily point to a deliberate crippling of existing machines. Example: the issue of their inability to both show video and on-screen navigation. Maybe they were delivered fatally broken, but I'm unconvinced. If 109 pounds is too expensive for you (and I think that's a bit too expensive for your application) then you aren't likely to find what you're looking for. How much "USB powered" do you want? Few of these recorders can be plugged into a USB port or power supply and used as if they wre on AC power, though some have an internal battery that can (usually only) be recharged by connecting to a USB port or AC power supply. And most of the small recorders that are designed for music recording - the kind with which most of us in rec.audio.pro are familiar - include an AC power supply. You might want to change your sights a bit, look for one that has reasonably good battery life and get a couple of sets of rechargeable AAA cells and a charger. As long as you can get a day's worth of use out of a set of batteries and you don't forget to recharge the replacements, it will be quite some time before you need to replace the batteries (though they really don't last forever). -- If you e-mail me and it bounces, use your secret decoder ring and reach me he double-m-eleven-double-zero at yahoo -- I'm really Mike Rivers ) |

You can easily find re-charageable AA cells and AA cells usually will last longer than AAA cells. Mark |

Hi Matt,
Mikes' advice is good. Two points worth noting; I'm not aware of any digital voice recorders that take AA batteries but a few calls might sort that out; Rechargeable AAA batteries - i don't know if they're that easy to get a hold of or what the price of the charger is. I spent $30 on a MP3 player for my mother. Ok, it's a no brand Asian made thing. But guess what, it plays MP3's, has a FM radio and a voice recorder. The voice recorder works brilliantly. She takes it to meetings, uses it as a dictaphone and so forth. It's ideal for what you want and is priced well within your range. With regards to batteries, she gets about 20 to 25 hours per battery (it only takes one) which is probably 2 weeks worth of lectures for a full-time student. Putting that in context, you're buying a 4 pack of AAA every month or so i'd say you're doing pretty well. I don't normally post to these things because i think in some respects they can be an utter waste of time. People jump in and have a technical debate about something that may be correct in itself but doesn't fit the context in which the forum was created. I suspect you would get better advice by picking up the telephone and speaking to someone or calling in to an appliance/ electronics store. |

And his interviews automatically get backed up into iTunes on his computer when he docks it. http://www.amazon.com/Belkin-Voice-R.../dp/B0000TNWU6 There are lots of these add on iPod recorders on the market for many of the iPod models. And they don't cost much. The one I got for him records in stereo. Nice for interviews, as you are on one side, the interviewee -is that at word? - is on the other. (I don't remember the model, it was a couple years ago.) Sounds pretty good too. And has been problem free. David Correia www.Celebrationsound.com |
