Default Pro Tools user, still using ancient Proteus

My Proteus/1 and Proteus/2 sound modules date from 1990, and I'm
starting to feel their limitations when I use them with Pro Tools:
- no cymbal roll
- no timpani roll
- no decent string tremolo in every range
- no vibraphone with motor off

I'm sure that better hardware modules exist. But I've been told that
it's better to use software samples. My question is: how can I use a
software sampler with Pro Tools MIDI tracks?

I seem to have the Kontakt player for GPO as a result of owning a
Finale license, but I don't know how to make Pro Tools recognize
Kontakt as a MIDI device.

I do not really want to change from Pro Tools, and the particular
things I'm doing are not score-based so I don't use Finale for them.
Should I just stick to hardware?
