Default AUDITION MP3 BITRATE

Hi, can anyone out there give me some advice on how to raise the kbps
when I mix down to Mp3 using audition 2.0? It seems that by default
it's mixing everything down to 128 kbps, far too lossy for what I want
the final product to be. Or, is it feasable to convert the 128 kbps
mixdown to a higher bitrate using a converter external to audition
unless, of course, the data's already lost in the initial mixdown. Any
help will be much appreciated.

I'd suggest that you do your mix to PCM (WAV) at least 44.1 kHz 16-bit.
Then you can use an outboard program to convert that to whatever MP3 bit
rate you want. It's another step, but it offers you more flexibility,
possibly a better MP3 encoder, and you can save the WAV file for future
use.

But to (not) answer your real question, I don't know anything about
Audition. I have the same question about Sound Forge 8, though. When I
tell it to export to an MP3 file, it does it, but it doesn't give me any
choice of encoding parameters. It might be an option or preference
somewhere that I've just never remembered to look for until I need it.

File/Save As. When you select Type: MP3 Audio do you then see below a
choice of templates with different quality settings? Plus a Custom
button if none of the templates suit you?

Well I'll be hornswoggled (and educated). Thanks for the tip. Who'd've
thought they'd call this "Template" rather than something meaningful
like "Bit Rate?"

"They" don't call it a template, but they do hide it under "options".
Assuming that by "they" we mean the folks controlling the Adobe Audition
2.0 user interface.

Because it is more than just bit-rate.

I'm not clear on what you mean by "mix down to MP3", but I do use Audition
2.0 to create .mp3 files from .wav files for posting occasionally.

For my configuration and needs this works:

1. open the original file
2. File|Save copy as ...|
* * * * a. choose Save as type: *mp3PRO (FhG)*.mp3
* * * * b. click on the Options button
* * * * * * * * i. choose CBR MP3
* * * * * * * * ii. select your preference in the scroll box (for informal
posting for friends I've used 128 Kbps, 44100 Hz, Stereo(11.0:1), but
options up to 320 Kbps, are offered, this may depend on your source
material, however)

Then OK and Save.

Or, is it feasable to convert the 128 kbps
mixdown to a higher bitrate using a converter external to audition
unless, of course, the data's already lost in the initial mixdown.

You can make more bits any time, but that does not recover _any_ quality
lost in the lossy compression step. *Bad idea.

Thanks, it was under my nose all the time. And thanks everyone for
some general good advice.

That dialogue box has to cover lots of formats, not just MP3. For
many of them, Bit Rate wouldn't be appropriate. Even for MP3 there's
more settings than just bit rate. The Description box below might
also have given you a clue.

And, of course, it's in the manual. Under "Save As" and under "bit
rate".

Remind me again how you intuitiivly learnt to align a tape deck
without consulting the manual? :-)

I lost that turn in the thread. Thanks for putting me straight. Oops.

Actually, we had done the Famous Forum Trick and subtly changed the
topic to Sound Forge, but I understand what you mean. Sound Forge has
Options and Preferences, too, and it would be convenient to put the
default "Save As MP3" bit rate there, with the option to change it in a
drop-down menu when you're saving the file. You have that option as
Laurence pointed out, but you have to look under "Template." That's
what I was bitching about.

The manual is the first place I usually look, but you have to know what
to look for when you don't have a paper manual to thumb through.

The names of the controls are printed adjacent to them. And if you know
how it's supposed to work, you can figure it out. Like most hardware
things. g

And, strangely enough, like most software things :-)
