Default real-time MIDI to wave plug-in

Is anyone aware of a plug-in that would convert MIDI audio data (while
being played in a project) to wav/digital audio so it can then have an
audio plug-in applied to it.

In other words- convert a MIDI track to an audio track, so that you
can use audio plug-ins. The problem I have right now is that the only
way to do this is to record the MIDI data into an audio track first.
it just seems like there should be a way to automate that and still
retain the flexibility of MIDI. thanks!!!

This is called a "synthesizer."

To clarify, Midi is not audio! Midi stands for musical instrument
digital interface. Midi is a set of commands that cause certian
actions in a sound generater. You can route your midi information to a
virtual synth or out to a hardware synth through a midi interface.

Once the midi reaches the sound source you then need to route the
audio to a track and record it.

I have been doing synth programming and production for 20plus years
and this process has not changed.

You will get great results if you take the time to make sure every
sound you trigger with midi is high quality and realistic. Dont count
on a plugin to make a bad synth sound sound great. GIGO Garbage in
Garbage out!! The reason to not automate this process is to allow you
to be artictic.

Happy sequencing!

I'm sure you know MIDI isn'tactually audio, just a set of instructions
to a synthesiser. But,leaving aside that bit of sloppy terminology es
this is exactly how virtual instruments work. When a software
synthesiser is integrated into an audio sequencer program (typically
as a "VST Instrument") it behaves as a plugin effect in an audio
channel. Effects may be applied to this channel as any other.

Hmmm ... MIDI isn't audio data

Ahhhhh ...

You need something like the ...

Roland/Edirol VSC-MP1 Virtual Sound Canvas Multi Pack

I'm aware of this fact, however it _becomes_ audio as it is outputed
from an audio port (after all you need to hear it somehow). What I
want to do is capture that and feed it back into an audio track to
apply compression, eq, reverb, echo, etc.

Maybe I should mention too that I am doing this all in Cakewalk Sonar
with soundfonts and no external MIDI or effects (other than a MIDI
keyboard for input purposes). Maybe that makes it a little clearer.
