Default Sonar recording

Having a bit of trouble and I am new to the program and recording in
general...

When I record--I'm using sonar 6 with a mobilpre USB interface--
sometimes the recording comes out fine and other times it starts
distorting a minute or two after starting. Often times when doing
multiple tracks, it will slow down and become sluggish and distorted.
It does the same thing occasionally during playback.

Any ideas as to what this could be?

Buffering? That's a guess. SONAR seems to like lots of buffering
on my system.

I'm thinking that is probably it but if I increase that, how do I
lower the latency while recording multiple tracks? Again, I'm pretty
new to this so my technical knowledge is lacking.
