I'm holding in my hands this SACD: Chopin Etudes, Perahia, Sony.
On the back it says:
- For this recording 24 bit technology was used to maximize sound quality
- This SACD was recorded utilizing Sony's Direct Stream Digital DSD System
and SBM direct.

So what is it? 24 bit PCM or DSD??
Does this mean recorded with DSD and converted to 24 bit PCM for mastering
and then back to DSD? Where does the SBM apply?

probably the recording was mastered at 24 bit PCM and converted to
DSD for SACD, but I must admit... the text on the SACD is confusing...

I'd guess: a 24 bit PCM recording converted to DSD.

I'd guess 24 bit PCM dithered to 16 bit using SBM for the Red Book layer.

It looks to me to be a marketing attempt by Sony/Philips to prevent the
consumer from seeing that any type of PCM process was used in making the
SACD. It would be sort of like admitting that they used a DVD-A type
process to make this SACD, and that would just be wrong wrong wrong

DSD is a more advanced system than PCM. The bandwidth is much greater,
and different software is needed to run it. To get this working right,
you need the correct D to A board in the player. The SACD sounds better
to me, even in a regular player. I think you can get some techno info on
TI website, look up the 24 bit DSD decoder D to A chips.
