I'm thinking over "FWD872/98" model on this page
http://www.consumer.philips.com/consumer/en/in/consumer/cc/_productid_FWD872_98_IN_CONSUMER/DVD-Mini-Hi-Fi-System+FWD872-98 It says it has USB connection option. The info on the site says that we can plug USB memory stick in the system. But, one of the sales person told me that it's USB streaming--meaning that I can play in computer using WinAmp or something but connect the computer's out via USB to the system so that the sound comes in the (audio) system's speaker. This model seems to be costlier comparing other cheaper systems that has higher PMPO output than this one. So, my question is that: is it really worth the feature? Can the feature be added later like an add-on? Is the USB connection just means plugging the USB memory stick or like USB streaming(?) as the sales person informed? TIA -- ?php echo 'Just another PHP saint'; ? Email: rrjanbiah-at-Y!com Blog: http://rajeshanbiah.blogspot.com/ |

Email: rrjanbiah-at-Y!com Blog: http://rajeshanbiah.blogspot.com/ The USB connection is for you to plug in an external USB storage device, like a USB memory stick, and be able to play media files stored on the device. Other Philips DVD players, such as the 5982/37, also have this feature. Whether it is worth it depends on the price you have to pay. But if you have divx files, it is nice to be able to play those without first converting them into DVD's. |

I have been told that if the player has DivX playability, there is no need to convert that to DVD. Am I mistaken? This USB option is definitely costlier http:// www.consumer.philips.com/consumer/en/in/consumer/cc/_categoryid_AUDIO_SYSTEMS_CA_IN_CONSUMER/ Can't we add this feature later on? You just copy the file to a USB storage device, and then connect the device to the Philips unit and play. DVD players are not necessarily able to handle the wide variety of audio and video settings that are possible with DIVX files and you may experience the same problem with streamed video. If you have an HD monitor, you might be better off using a computer with DVI output that can be sent to a DVI or HDMI input on the monitor. You might find that an older computer (Athlon or Pentium 4) will suffice for this type of application although it probably won't be able to handle really high-definition (1080p) video when that becomes more available. |

Thanks for your comments. Of late, I have also been told that buying audio system when having computer might not be a good idea; instead buying speakers should be enough (changing software in computer is easy). But, my old P4 computer is finding difficult to play DVDs. -- ?php echo 'Just another PHP saint'; ? Email: rrjanbiah-at-Y!com Blog: http://rajeshanbiah.blogspot.com/ |
