Default Step up transformer

Hi Wolverine,

I've been boucing back and forth between Europe and the US for awhile so I
know the decision process. I have all kinds of US equipment here in Belgium.

First check inside and see if the transformer is already dual voltage. Often
manufacturers use one transformer for all markets but skimp on giving you a
voltage switch on the back because UL are picky about this with
certification in the US. On 2 (less expensive) amplifiers, and a digital
guitar preamp I have all I had to do was switch 2 transformer wires on the
PS PCB, they were even labled and made it easy. Double check with
multimeter!

Otherwise getting a stepdown transformer is a possibility. I have a very old
Nikko Alpha 1 amp that I still love that runs on a transformer here. There
is an audible difference primarily when playing it loud. (sucking more
current). Transient behavior at medium levels is also audible but very
subtle. I have a few transformers laying around with different sizes and I
find that you do get the best performance (if you are picky) buy getting an
overkill sized one. Let's say 2000 watt torroidal model. They run about 220
euro's over here. My 1000 watter is alright. The 500 watt torroidal sounds
lifeless with the Nikko.

Contacting Adcom, as previously suggested, is a good idea to know if the
transformer is already dual voltage or if they indeed have a dedicated 200 v
unit.

Hope this helps.

I need the help of the experts here.

I have couple of Adcom GFA555 MKII that I brought with me to
Dubai,UAE. These amps are from the states but like all things
stateside, this amp run on 110V 60hz current while the local current
is 220V 50hz. Since amps have been with me since forever so its quite
old but they still run beautifully so I thought of bringing them with
me to my new assignement.

What I want to know is, is it safe to use a step down transformer on
these amps? If I am going to buy a step up transformer, what should I
look for? Will there be any difference sonically? What power rating
should the transformer have?

I really need expert opinion here so plese help me. I have googled but
I couldnt get a definitive answer.

Thanks
