Hi Gary, nice to see you on the forum again. Okay, let me try to explain. I was referring to the performance, caught live at Brown's club in Los Angeles in 1990. Gene Harris was the pianist; Jeff Hamilton on drums. They were playing an extended gig at the club and accordingly they are really tight, having fun, and getting it on. And the sound is excellent. I've got many (not all) of the Telarc Ray Brown SACD's...Monty Alexander is not the pianist that Gene Harris is/was, and the Telar's recordings, while good, have nothing over the best of these Concords. So overall, I think this is the best of the ten or so Telarc/Concord SACD's I have with Ray Brown on bass..you might disagree. As to my comment specifically...I have listen to this only on surround..what I meant was that the performance was so good that I can't imagine it sounding "bad" no matter what the recording quality was on the stereo and CD layers. (I've just given them a quick listen and I can assure you that they sound fine but IMO obviously pale next to the surround mix.) Hope this helps...I agree I was not clear in my original post. The thing here is the music...great performance, fine derived surround sound. And stereo/CD layers that are acceptably good.. OK, thanks - then it was mainly a typo on the word "imagine." Maybe I should look for that CD. My RBF (Record Buying Factor) hasn't been very high lately, since I've been so absorbed in video projects and learning same on my new editing system. That's why I haven't been looking in on the audio groups much. Haven't seen RAO in years. Gary Eickmeier |
