A generic third party front suspension repait-kit may be all you need,
it is not all that costly to get done, two hours for both probably, and
they are may be worth that much. Feed the critters some signal and
listen for audio from all units and for how midrange and treble sounds.

Finding new "probably right" bass units is another option, the Peerless
model range would then be my first place to look and Monacors model
range the next.

Are the treble units conventional dome tweeters?

Kind regards

I'm rethinking the whole project now Peter. These were going to be
paired up with my Advents and I suspect, even if properly repaired,
they will not keep up. I had my Advents refurbished about 15 years ago
and they've been going strong ever since. I like the quality of them
and don't want to do anything to denigrade the system.

Would I risk anything in my receiver by hooking them up and trying
them? What if there's a dead short in them somewhere?

The tweeters seem to me to be conventional. One of the mid-range
speakers has a small tear as well.

Thanks again.

You should NOT use them until you get the woofers fixed, assuming you
are going to. The surrounds help to keep the voice coil centered in the
magnetic gap. Feeding them more than a *very* small amount of power
could cause the coil to rub and short. The other danger is
over-excursion which could cause the coil to leave the gap completely
and be damaged when it tries to reenter. Yet another possibility is
damage to the delicate wire which feeds the voice coil.

I got a nice pair of vintage EPi's--cheap--which seemed great candidates
for a woofer refurb. I bought the kits, did a neat job of replacing the
surround....and one woofer crapped out just days later. I suspect that
the connection to the VC is damaged, as I can get it to work if I
manipulate it a bit. I was so disapointed I've not checked into
repairing that problem.

You might want to follow the advice about replacing the woof's
altogether. Unless you know they've not been played with the surrounds
compromised, you have to pretty much figure they're toast.

As a side note, I've never heard of that particular Pioneer model....

Thanks for that informative reply Jak.

Great to hear you mention EPI's. I had 4 of them set up in a quad
system at one time. They were something else !! The girlfriend ended
up with 'em.

I'll take your advice and refrain from trying the speakers at this
point. I've never tried re-foaming a speaker but may just give it a
try. Sure wish I knew if these speakers were worth the effort though.
From what I remember of Pioneer speakers, they were not particularly

good, but these were made in '85 and I wasn't paying too much
attention to audio stuff at that time.
