news:_Z_Jb.58384$xX.343448@attbi_s02... Curious, is there single, credibly documented case of a stylus assembly being damaged because Windex was being used, with Windex being the prime causal agent? No two styli (same or different manufacturers AND various models) can be assumed to be affixed to their cantilevers via an *IDENTICAL* substance formulation over the entire period of their manufacture. So even if one snip How many instances are there of stylus damage from any solvent? I can't recall having heard of anyones needle faling off! I'd be more woried about "solvent" tracking up teh pivot and either hardening the suspension or leaving a deposit on the pivot bearings. Personally - I stick to isoprop. (no pun intended) but I have noticed as my records age (I havn't bought any new albums for a few years now) that I am having to clean my stylus more and more often. Does vinyl deteriorate over the years? I most certainly agree with the likelihood of damage to the stylus assembly rather than the tip falling off. I also clean gunk off styli and records with isopropyl alcohol (chromatographically pure 100% 2- propanol). I do not trust "CVS"-type rubbing alcohol having unspecified ingredients including fragrances. I have noted any deterioration of my 40+ my year old vinyl other than that which comes from atmospheric pollutants, dust and possible spittle that I put on them. Things such as coughing, sneezing, and even talking or chewing food is a no-no if one is close to the surface of a LP. So far, at least, no ill effects have resulted from my use of 2-propanol and I'm dead certain that all my LPs and styli will remain functional long after I'm gone. |
