(Ben Hoadley) wrote: What is the gain and the loss if I place my speakers upside down? That is the tweeter on the bottom and the woofer on the top? There two basic considerations. First the woofer-to-floor/ceiling distance will change and so the precise frequency of the 'floor bounce' notch will change. Second, vertically arrayed loudspeakers have more uniform horizontal directivity at the expense of vertical directivity. Ordinarily the off-axis vertical lobing willl be somewhat different in the upward vs downward direction. Inverting the speaker simply re-orients the lobes. Typically either of these differences will be minor and in the majority of cases will only have minor effects. I agree with the explanation and want to add a few more considerations. If you have small 2-way speakers on stands, the effect will be minimal. Best is to have the tweeters in ear-hight, so if you have low seating and high speaker stands, the high frequency response might be even better. Another game is tall speakers. Here the distance of the bass speaker to the floor should be a design constraint and if changed considerably will alter the frequency response in the bass (80 to 300Hz) area. Now the ceiling is another thing. Very low ceiling will give considerably more energy in this range, because the run of the reflection is shorter and of more equal value with the direct wave. So it is worth a try-out if you do not have experience with simulation programs like AKABAK. A similar effect but for higher frequencies is the tilt angle some stands are inducing. Well designed speakers do not like this, but maybe you can improve a crappy speaker a bit with the right angle... -- ciao Ban Bordighera, Italy electronic hardware designer |
