I am need of information on what type of plug to use on an Creative
Labs Audigy 2 ZS THX sound card to a Klipsch DD-5.1 digital decoder. Creative's documentation states use a 4-pole miniplug to RCA connector and than use an 75 ohm coax to the decoder. I have yet to find anywhere that even knows what a 4-pole miniplug is. The coax cable is easy. I have read that some people have used a mono miniplug and it works. I tried that and the decoder only recognizes the input as stereo. No surround. Any ideas or help? Thanks, Koa |

Creative's documentation states use a 4-pole miniplug to RCA connector and than use an 75 ohm coax to the decoder. I have yet to find anywhere that even knows what a 4-pole miniplug is. The coax cable is easy. A four-conductor (tip/ring1/ring2/groundshell) 3.5 mm miniplug is used as a speakermike connector on some Yaesu amateur-radio transceivers such as the VX-5. You can see a picture of it: http://home.comcast.net/~sllewd/ Click on "VX-5R modifications", wait until the Java menu appears in the left pane of the window (be patient, it takes a while), click on "Tips and tricks", and then scroll the right pane down to the speaker/mic connection. If you want to buy just the plug, you can purchase it from Mouser Electronics (www.mouser.com) as item #171-7435 - catalog price is $1.53. Soldering this little puppy is a bit tricky due to the small size of the contacts inside the plastic shell, but it's definitely possible (especially if you need only to connect to ground and one contact using a small-gauge coax). [A caution to any VX-5R owners who may be reading: this plug does not actually work well in the VX-5R. The metal ring at the base of the plug is of a wider diameter than the one used on Yaesu's own connectors, and it hits the rubber gasket on the VX-5 plug when you try to insert it into the HT. Not a good choice for making your own speakermike adapter unless you're willing to use a Dremel to shave down the metal!] Yaesu also makes (or made) a "cloning" cable for the VX-5, which has one of these connectors on each end. You could buy one (or any speakermike designed for the VX-5R) and cut apart the cable. -- Dave Platt AE6EO Hosting the Jade Warrior home page: http://www.radagast.org/jade-warrior I do _not_ wish to receive unsolicited commercial email, and I will boycott any company which has the gall to send me such ads! |
