Default 3.5mm jack plugs in different lengths?

Hi all,

I recently bought a 2.5" laptop drive caddy which can play divx files
etc through your TV, and it came with a cable of 3.5 mm jack to red,
white and yellow phono.

I've tested and the jack supplied from eBay is too short, does anyone
have knowledge that there are in fact different lengths of Jacks
please? Or where to get them from?

I'm based in the UK, but could import.

If it's a 4-pole 3.5mm plug, it's called a Camcorder Lead. Maplins
have them, in 1.5m or 3m lengths.

Or you could just get 3 phono cables and 3 back-to-back phono
connectors.

yep its a 4 pole 3.5mm plug, but i'm on about the actual length of the
metal jack, there are jacks with different lengths, I know it sounds
crazy but i've seen it with my own eyes!

If you were a manufacturer and wanted to ensure that
customers bought cords only from you, it would be easy
enough to have special connectors made that were "non-
standard" so that customers (like you!) couldn't use the
commodity/generic ones.

There are certainly 1/4" plugs of different lengths for that
very reason.

From the manufacturer of the equipment you are trying to connect to?
(Or did you miss the meaning of my response?)

sorry i did miss the meaning of your reply.

I dont think i'll be able to get one easily as its hard to trace the
manufacturer, its a cheap Chinese hard drive media player which has no
real make, and the distributor of the device says the only cables they
have are like the ones they sent me, which dont work!!

Cheers anyway.

Well, two types are offered by Maplins (see the link I sent you). As
they bother to keep a "Sony" type and a "Panasonic" type, perhaps
they're different. If you've got a local Maplins ask to see them. Or
order one of each, - they aren't expensive.

Cheers for the idea Lawrence, I've been into Maplin and compared the
cables, they're the same!

Just to clarify, how do you know the plug on the cable is "too short"?
Have you opened the thing to see inside the jack and can see that the
contacts aren't matching the plug? Or is something just not working
properly?
