Default Recommendations for a new computer for converting audio files

Hello All:

My home-built computer is getting old. It has served me faithfully in
converting my cassettes to digital media for the past few years. The
quality was acceptable. The speed was low, but tolerable.

I am looking into a comporable system, this time around off-the-
shelf.

Any recommendations, any brands and models to avoid?

Thanks,

Deguza

P.S.:

Here is my current configuration:

-- CPU: AMD ATHLON 2200 , 512 K RAM, Soyo SY-KT333 DRAGON Ultra
(Platinum Edition) motherboard. (Here is mo

-- On board CMI 8738 providing 6-channel audio

Get a better sound card (sound card, not sound blaster, you do not want
blasted sound, do you?) and a pair of faster disks and double the amount
of ram and keep the computer, if you have money to spare after that,
then get a "19" wide" screen or better. Just my opinion, you can
probably find someone that will tell you that as long as a sound card
has lower distortion than the compact cassette technology, then it is
ok. It is then their opinion.

Very old technology. I swore off Soyo motherboards after some bad
experiences some years ago. I use Asus or ECS or nothing, and I still
question my usage of ECS sometimes.

OK for casual monitoring, but not for critical work.

I'm using an Athlon-64 3800 dual core for my more processing-intensive audio
and video work. It is fact, but as the price-performance of processors keeps
improving, I can see the need for more speed. I find that equipping it with
800 MHz dual channel RAM is very helpful. The motherboard is an Asus
M2NPV-VM .

I'd be careful of motherboards with just 2 SATA sockets, given that I just
bought my first popular-priced SATA DVD burner (Liteon).

Compared to other applications, processing audio is pretty
simple and most any off-the-shelf system will likely do what
you want without issue.

The quality of audio coming off a cassette is significantly
worse than the audio capabilities of most computers (even
"Soundblasters" which tend to be the bottom of the barrel)
So IMHO, the "quality" of audio from cassettes is not really
affected by the sound hardware or software on the computer.

This is generic advice since you didn't actually state exactly
what kind of processing you are doing, what software you
are using, what kinds of conversions, length (space) requirments,
etc, etc.
