Default Using an old tape deck mic pre???

hi,

i have a computer based DAW (cubase SX3) and have a decent mic pre, but i am
thinking that i'd like to try to use my old Technics RSM-63's mic pre for
some dynamic mics. am i safe in assuming that all i need to do is get some
RCA to 1/4 inch cables to plug her into the inputs of my Echo mia? is three
any way i can add the tape deck to the signal path to use it in conjunction
with my other mic pre, so i can use the phantom power from the other pre? i
know all the ins and outs of this are unbalanced, but it has a nice warm
sound with an SM57.

thanks

yes. the MIA works well with balanced or unbalanced line level sources.

yes, but it will likely be cumbersome to interface and there may be other
pitfalls. a simpler approach would be to add a phantom power adaptor. i use
a Rolls PB23 when the need arises.

thabnks for the info. i will look into a separate PP.

this actually sounds good. are there other tape decks from that era that had
decent mic pres built into them i'm wondering if i could find things that
are more economic that are still of great sonic quality. this does sound
very good with the 57. i will have to get a power adapter to try my
condensers.

I'm guessing you'll have problems with condensers. If you get a
transformer-coupled phantom supply you'll be able to interface with the
unbalanced input of old tape deck mic pres, but a transformerless supply
will probably have problems. Also, the gains on these pres are pretty high,
and condenser mics are likely to overload them.

Peace,
Paul
