Default 7.1 Question

Probably one of the most concise, to the point answers I have come across.
Serge, Thank You.

I noticed that HD-DVD's specs note 7 channels of audio (HD-DVD's web
site). At the same time, they (and others) note 7.1 audio. Is the
subwoofer - the .1 - signal derived from the 7 channels? (likewise
for 5.1?).

Wayne

The subwoofer can be fed from two sources:-

The 0.1 LFE channel is for Low Frequency Effects, and, as its name
suggests, carries extreme low frequency information for effect (things
like runbles, LF information on helicopters, explosions and so forth.

The Decoder/receiver's bass management also decides how much of the 5 (or
7) channels' lf information goes to the subwoofer and how much to the
'speakers. Note that it is possible for the receiver's bass management
also to send LFE information to the main 'speakers when there is no
subwoofer, so overall, what signals the subwoofer gets depends on the
receiver and not on the DVD or programme being played.
