Someone just told me that Madrid is the number one destination in Europe for Americans. How did that happen? Boon Flamenco and/or castanets? I'd have thought that Barcelona would be the more popular destination. The one thing I keep hearing over the years about Madrid is that it's Pickpocket Central. Boon |

You never hear anything about it (at least here in the US). It looks like heaven geographically, and the history of the place is unbelievably rich. Yet I don't know anyone who's ever been there. Read (or watch) the chapter in "A Cook's Tour" by Anthony Bourdain. The friend of mine who went was more interested in the pilgrimage sites than in sight-seeing, but found the people friendly and the food and wine wonderful. I have been several times in Portugal for job & holidays. People are modest, friendly and open-minded. Porto and Lisboa are very interesting cities. They surely have one of the nicest vineyard of the world (Douro Valley). The food is not at the level of the wine except for fish cooking. |

What's wrong with beans? :-) Vinho verde is a popular summer wine among local pianists. Portugal was the home of the first great piano composer, Domenico Scarlatti. Stephen |
