I need some sennheiser 580 grade headphones that can't be heard from
2-3 feet. 580 arrived today and sound great but I can hear them when my wife is listening to some stuff. Is there something with about that sound quality that seals the sound better so that whoever is next to the listener can have some peace and quiet? Thank you! |

It's much easier to stop the sound getting in your ears than it is to stop it escaping from your wife's headphones. A cheap pair of ear-protectors for power tool operators should do that job very well indeed. It costs a lot more to get open headphone quality from closed. I need a second set anyway and there is NO way my second pair will be open. |

I've never owned a 580, but I did recently have a Senn 595 and from that I would think the Etymotic ER 4s (priced similarly if you shop around) would be sonically compatable--detailed, "forward" sounding. Sound leak is absolutely zero (I use my Etymotics in bed after my wife goes to sleep; years back when I had some Sony MDR V6s she could actually hear those, turned way down;-) and passive isolation is outstanding. If you can't go IEM, the old MDR V6 is well thought of. You can still find them on ebay. I had mine nearly 15 years ago, so I can't really compare them with Sennheiser or Grado, which I use or used today. AKG also makes some good closed phones, but I've never tried them. http://www.headfi.org is a great place to get information, opinions, etc., on anything regarding headphonics. Andy Katz |

Sennheiser makes a great sealed headphone that is being used by more
and more studios. The model number is the HD280, and I've seen it as low as $59 (I bought a pair from ecost.com at this price right after they were first introduced - I think they now want $89 or $99 for them). Retail is $200, and most of its parts are user replacable. The spec sheet that comes with it claims to reduce the ambient noise level by about 30dB as well. They are rugged and I find them comfortable, but everyone's head is a different shape ;-) You can probably find some reviews on them if you google the model number and the Sennheiser name. I also have a pair of Beyer DT990Pro's (They are older DT990Pro's - The current DT990Pro is much more cheaply built and not the same headphone and does not sound nearly as good as the older model, IMHO) and a pair of Sennheiser HD600's: I find the HD280's be be very close in sound quality to both of these most excellent headphones, but not quite as good. My preference is for the DT990Pro's with the HD600's a very close second. There is no noise leakage from the HD280 so this is a headphone you should consider. wrote: I need some sennheiser 580 grade headphones that can't be heard from 2-3 feet. 580 arrived today and sound great but I can hear them when my wife is listening to some stuff. One report on pricegrabber says I need to break them in by playing music very loud (I assume the phones should be off the head :-) Do I really need to do that or the guy was pulling the leg of newbies like myself? If I do then for how long? Overnight? |

Just ordered AKG K 271 Studio. HD280 Silver arrived today and sound good except the padding on headband is too thin. Not very comfortable :-( |
