Like all areas down here, Oceanside has some good & some not-so good
neighborhoods. I have a friend who lives there, but her family has
lived there for many years. Like all other places in this county, the
prices have gone up.

As far as Oceanside vs. the rest of the county - as people said it's
closer to Orange county/LA. Then again I've made it from La Jolla to
mid-Wilshire in 1 hour 45 minutes, so the 2.5 hour trip isn't always
the case.

A lot depends on what you want to do besides go to LA. For me it is way
too far from the baseball stadium. North County has been going through
a building boom, but I don't know how it is for restaurants & stuff
like that.

There is a nice bluegrass festival up that way during august (in vista
- due east).

The other explosive growth area is east lake in Chula Vista, but that's
much further south.

Also - I don't know if you guys have kids - school districts also vary.

Laguna Beach is paradise (includes 72 virgins), but the price tag is quite
hefty. However, the Democratic party is the equivalent of the Priory of Sion
there.

In Southern California, some of the best home prices are now out in certain
areas of the Coachella Valley. It's paradise most of the year, hellacious in
the summer -- but you'll have your own pool. From the desert, LA seems a
million miles away (I like it like that), but it's close enough for special
events and getaways.

Besides bargain prices for decent homes, there remains a trend-bucking
music/art scene up in the high desert areas of Joshua Tree, Yucca Valley,
Pioneertown, and Morongo Valley. Joshua Tree has a nifty music festival
every year -- kind of an anti-Coachella Fest. No plastic surgeons or tobacco
industry lawyers up there...

This fella is a plastic surgeon or a tobacco industry lawyer.

Is that good or bad? Too much money to live with the poor folks in
Oceanside?

And what's with the signs along I-5 around there warning that there are
people crossing the highway? Is there a high suicide rate?

I just wonder why a guy who might afford Laguna Hills or Dana Point
didn't just send his personal assistant to the post office.

Apparently some folks fleeing across the border sans entry visa have
been known to try running across the freeway to move further inland &
have been struck by drivers caught unawares by the presence of
pedestrians in lanes.

Typical snob reaction. Check the prices in Dana point or Laguna Beach,
higher than Carlsbad, you must be a millionaire to check into those
digs. You need to do some research with a real estate broker to suss
out the financial situation here. Plan to spend at least a couple of
weeks here exploring the possibilities. The web also has most real
estate listed here on line so you can review the market before you
come.

Those "illegal aliens crossing the highway" signs are cult collectables
here. Many have been stolen during the night to find them plastered
across someone's living room wall (they are quite large). Typically,
someone with a large pickup will pull up to these during the night with
a couple of friends and a chain saw and whammo, it's in the back of the
truck being carried off to someone's living room wall. Wish I had one
myself.

I worked with a set designer who had that image tattooed to his leg. I
guess he is proud of his heritage...

I do have a hard hat that has that "logo" across the front. I always
get great reactions wearing it around any construction areas.

It's right off the map for your lack of appreciation for heat.
Seriously. I went to school there in the '60's. We'd always got out by
mid May due to the heat. It ain't any cooler now.

I was not too far from there a couple of years ago, and the temp at 9:00
PM was 115. It's not the hottest I've been, but it sure was warm.

Folks brought up earthquakes and I thought I would share a site that is
interesting for CA

http://quake.wr.usgs.gov/recenteqs/

In the last week in CA and NV we had 317 earthquakes. Almost all were
under 2.0, biggest was 4.4. Sounds bad but under 2 means that probably
very few people outside of say 30 miles from the epicenter felt it and
most probably thought it was a truck going over a bump out side the
house. Some where around 3 most people close would know it was an
earthquake. Around 4 you definitely know it, if you felt it. If your
on the road it takes about a 5 to feel it and know what you felt. And
of course it depends also on if it's a shake or a bump and how long it
lasts. The vast majority are so short that by the time you think you
might have felt it, it's gone.
I felt one today. It was 70 miles away and was 1.2 and lasted .03 sec.
I only know it was one (and not the neighbor dropping something)
because it was real quiet and I felt the bump and I checked the site
out of curiosity. I'm pretty sensitive to them having grown up around
here, but even I wouldn't have been sure if I hadn't seen the report.

So I guess I'm saying that of the "natural" disasters to worry about
earthquakes are way, way down the list. If your trading hurricanes,
tornados, tropical storms, blizzards etc for earthquakes your making a
great deal.
