I have some old material on Cubase 5, Cubase SX 1 and Nuendo 1 on a
desktop PC. I'd like to consolidate all these songs into Cubase SX3 on
a Mac G4 Powerbook. Will this work? I haven't bought Cubase SX3 Mac
yet, but I will buy the SX1-to-SX3 crossgrade if I think it'll work. My
primary goal is that all tracks and punch ins stay aligned and that
muted sections remain muted.

Or would I be better off to bounce tracks or stems and import into Pro
Tools LE or Logic Pro?

You'll be able to open any SX1 project in SX3 (in fact you may open all .cpr
or .npr projects)

I never did it, but I think you'll be able to import your Cubase 5 files
(.all if I remember correctly) in SX3.

They should work as usual (except for some older plugins).

Well I think there is a bigger issue here as to what software you
eventually want to be using long-term. There are ways to get your old
projects wherever you want to go but choosing between Cubase, Pro Tools
and Logic is generally based on more than that. What are your ultimate
goals?

I don't anticipate longevity for Cubase. It was one of my first
sequencers, then I moved on, and who knows, maybe SX3 has pro features
that were lacking when I abandoned Cubase in 2001. The Steinberg files
I have are from a singer-songwriter project that started in 1999.
Obviously, singing isn't her main gig, but now she wants to finish the
project, or so she says.

I think bouncing tracks and stems isn't a good idea. I prefer to work
on these songs natively, but my desktop PC is a crasher, whereas my Mac
is stable with stellar peripherals. So I looked at the Steinberg chart
and these files are compatible with any version of SL and SX, and I see
SL 2 on eBay for $100. The snafu is I don't know if it really is Tiger
compatible. Steinberg claims 10.2 or later, but Tiger wasn't even
around when old software was written. I might spring for the crossgrade
and it'll cost me about $175.

Anyway, I'm still thinking about my approach. For sure, I want to go
native.

They will all open in SX3, absent any plugin VSTis you no longer have
installed. Cubase has come a long way since 2001.
You should be pleasantly surprised.
