Yeah, but it still stands that crappy speakers will sound crappy in any
given room.

Certainly true. If the speakers really suck, they're the weak link. As
they get better, the room starts to become the weaker link. But yes, you
need to get to a certain minimum level of quality before there's any
point. Luckily, reasonable speakers are available at reasonable prices.
