After many frustrating months and many dead ends (e.g., virus scanner,
Quicktime updates, testing with Foobar, etc.) I finally have found what caused intermittent (~every 30 sec.) playback dropouts on my PC. It's the "Power Save Mode" setting for my Broadcom WiFi chipset. I had it set to "fast". When I set it to "disabled", the dropouts disappeared. It's now been two days, and I've not heard a single one. If whoever maintains the appropriate FAQ reads this message, please consider adding this solution. All the best. |

The FAQ was last updated long before the advent of wireless networking, (and practically before wired networking, for that matter.) |

It's the first suggestion on every audio FAQ out there. Disable all ethernet cards for a DAW. |

Or more generally, disable everything that isn't crucial to audio... if it works at that point then slowly add things back in until you come across whatever the problem is. |

Disable all functions not directly required for making music while performing critical music recording/playback. On today's powerful machines this rule can often be ignored. But remember it exists, and try it first if problems DO occur. |
