Hello all:
I am in the market for a new DVD player. I want something for less
than
500 US dollars that is going to give me the best bang for my dollar.
This unit has to play DVD's well and has to be a good CD player also,
since my budget does not allow for separate units. I am even willing
to
consider a used unit if it is worth it. I think my best bet will be to
spend the bulk of my money on speakers and a good integrated amp at a
later time. Thanks for all the help.

I would recommend that you look for great DVD video performance first.
If
you have, or are thinking of getting, a HDTV, you may want to check out
the newer upsampling DVD players. For example, the Oppo Digital
OPDV971H.
It plays DVD-Audio also, and comes with either the HDMI or DVD-I cable.
Just that cable can cost upwards of the $200 this player sells for, at
some boutique stores.

I would not worry much about the CD audio quality. If you don't like
it,
you can always use the DAC's on your receiver.

Would it be impertinent to point out that both DVD-A and SACD use ONLY
the
DAC's on the DVD player unless he is buying one of the very top high
end
units that can output ilink.

Yes, it would be. The OP said that the unit has to play DVD's well. Most
DVD players do CD well. So I don't think he has to worry much about a
DVD player with great video performance having poor CD performance.
Also, OP did not say anything about desire for DVD-A or SACD. Which is
reasonable, given the current state of affairs.

Is my ~$500 Yamaha S2500 one of the 'very top high end units'? I had no
idea!
Because it does output via ilink.

Actually, it is one of the few mid-tier units to have it. Congratulations!
