Default Buying Mixers

Hi everyone!
I want to buy a new mixer since my old one has no control over
individual channels. I have been looking at mixers on line and have
found 2 mixers that I like the best. I'd love it if some people could
give me opinions on the 2 mixers.

Also what does everybody think about the site SameDayMusic.com were
this mixer is? Are they a good trusted site? I have seen that they have
free shipping and good prices which I like. (Lol of course I like good
prices)

I think you first need to explain what you want a mixer for. Is this
for PA? Is this for recording? If it's for recording, what are you
recording to? If it's for PA, what kind of monitoring do you want?

And what do you mean by your old one has "no control over individual
channels?"

I've never heard of them, but they look like they carry the typical
low-end MI store gear that you can get at your local music store.
This may be a good thing or a bad thing, I dunno. Depends on what you
want and whether you want handholding from the dealer.

I want this mixer for my home studio recording. I do have a nice
sound-proof studio, but I want to spend as little money as possible,
but still not get bad quality sound out of a cheap mixer.

If it's for recording, what are you recording to?

I am recording to a computer through a Line 6 Tone Port UX2. When I got
this a tried using the software that came with it to record, but I
hated it and switched back to Cakewalk Music Creator Pro to record
since thats what I was using before I got my UX2 and liked it a lot.

I mean that you can't control the bass for just one chanel, you have to
turn the bass up for all of the chanels.

Um... What do you plan to do with it? The 1222 is a kind of
all-in-one package and has more mic inputs. The 1622 has subgroups
(though not really enough inputs to use them for anything but a second
output mix). There are also aux sends to consider. If you just like
to play with a mixer, than the 1622 would be more fun... Behringer
consoles are fine, and good for the price, just don't throw it arround
a lot. If you tour it a lot, rack it. As far as the site, I haven't
used them, but I've never had a problem with a site screwing me
either, so I'd trust them. Just a note: there are a lot of sites that
have same or similar prices and shipping policies.

OK, then may I recommend you spend a little more and get the 2222 or
2442? You'll eventually apreciate the extra channels, more control
over the eq, aux sends for headphone sends to the musicians, and
subgroups so you can rout to multiple tracks. Also, the 2442 has
direct outputs, so you can connect each channel to its own track.
If you use a PC, consider getting Nuendo and either a multi-input card
or multiple sound cards and do 8-track at least. Then you can mix in
post for the best mix you can get. Mixing live will never be as good
as post.

To answer Brandon's first question a little better I plan to use this
as a radio station (not full time) and just a place to record stuff
that I do (such as I play electric bass so record that) and record some
friends' bands and stuff.

Completely bypassing the mixer issue, I'll testify that
samedaymusic.com is OK. I ordered a few items from them several months
ago without difficulties. They actually hold to their same day
shipping policy, which means you might receive the package the
following day if you live relatively close. (I think they ship from New
Jersey) The prices are nothing special, but at least you can save a
few bucks with the free shipping.

The little Behringer mixers are generally good value for money.

But I'm intrigued by this mixer you've got that has no channel
controls? What is it - a simple merge box? What's your application?

Ah. Actually, on a digital system, you would normally record flat.
Partly because any necessary compensation can be done later, partly
because the area in which cheap mixers generally fail miserably is the
eq.

This Mixer that I have now, I bought at Radio Shack when I first got
into recording and is a Radio Shack brand. And yes, Its basically a
simple little merge box that only has 4 channels (that probably annoys
me the most) and is a pain to have to unplug something every time I
want to record something else than what I have plugged in.

But I'm intrigued by this mixer you've got that has no channel

What do you mean by " What's your application? "

Do you mean what is the mixer?

No. What are you using it for?

Behringer mixers provide considerably more capability than your Radio
Shack mixer but many here will prefer more expensive equipment. I did
get a Behringer mixer (2442FX I believe) that that shipped with a bad
effects DSP processor from SameDayMusic. I contacted Behringer by email
and they got back to me within the day with a suggestion to fix the
problem. It didn't resolve the issue so I contacted SameDayMusic and
they shipped another unit right out with a prepaid return shipping
label. The service was really great. I should point out that the mixer
was B stock so reliability is likely poorer than with regular stock.

Also, you are not likely to be very impressed with the effects if the
processor is like the one in the 2442FX. The effects are OK for live
gigs in noisy venues (which is what I wanted) but not for recording.
Get some good software effects such as directX or VST plug-ins if your
DAW software supports them. Also, as others have suggested here, do
equalization with software and set the mixer EQs to flat.
