Default Best CD Recorder for final mix?

I need a CD recorder.

My HHB CDR850 has been to the repair shop in Dallas and $300 later, it
still doesn't work right. The repair guy said I should try different
media than Taiyo Yuden which I have been using for some time. He
recommended Memorex Music CD. It just defies logic to say that after
three years of burning flawless cds on a particular media that a change
would solve my problem. But I tried the Memorex media and it was better
but still not right. I can burn like 3 songs then the fourth is all
full if digital crap. He also said it might need a new motor.

Anyway, I liked the HHB for excellent sound and until last July, for
it's dependability. But shouldn't a CD burner last more than 4 years
(780) hours???

So, how 'bout some recomendations??? Thinking about the HHB 830 Burnit
Plus. I want excellent sound first and foremost. I'm mixing down from
an 02R.

Thanks,

John

I guess so, or you need a new repair shop. It sounds like yours wasn't
fixed right (and it may indeed need a new motor)

Not so outrageous. Manufacturers change their formulas now and then,
and it's possible that the TY disks that you buy today aren't the same
as the ones that you bought 3 years ago. I Have a TASAM CD recorder
that's kind of fussy, and it works well with the Taiyo Yuden Silver
disks that I bought a couple of years ago. I haven't bought any
recently so I can't say that mine still works as well with them.

Are those Memorex Music CDs the ones that look like a 45 RPM record?
Those are low speed (16x) disks and tend to work pretty well in
stand-alone CD recorders, which, since they record in real time, write
at 1x speed. But the fact that it goes to pot after a few songs
suggests that there's still a probelm with your recorder.

Anyway, I liked the HHB for excellent sound and until last July, for
it's dependability. But shouldn't a CD burner last more than 4 years

Frankly, that's questionable. It would be nice, though. My dealer
pushes people toward the Marantz line. HHB doesn't actually make
anything, but they usually pick pretty good stuff to market. Marantz
gets used in a fair number of installations because it's cheap enough
to replce in a couple of years when it wears out. TASCAM CD recorders
are probably OK, but they have brought out an awful lot of different
models over the years - maybe they've never quite got it right - or
maybe they're really improvements.

Actually - I thinkl shipping was included in the $300. A capacitor was
leaking and so it was replaced and the board was cleaned where
corrosion from the cap. leaked.

I mainly use for mixdown via coxial cable. But I have used it live. In
fact that's when it stopped working very well - I recorded a river for
an art show - 89 minutes of river, birds and wind. The recorder was
shaken and got really dusty - maybe it was too much!

I've got a fairly new HHB CDR 830. Your experiences give me a warm feeling

One could hope...

That's one nice thing about doing mixdowns with a computer. You don't need a
CD recorder, just a common CD burner.

Which, of course, is all you've got in the HHB box. Plus a load of
interface circuitry that is unused and irrevelant if you're
interfacing directly to a digital mixer. Plus some rudimentary
editing functions considerably less powerful than those found in
Audacity, let alone a full-featured wav editor. Plus a need for
media that will work reliably at 1X, which can be hard to find not the
technology has moved on.

I have been using a Tascam CDR 2000 for about four years. I like it
quite well. I use it for rehearsals and other things that don't go
through the computer. It's nice to have a stand alone recorder for a
variety of reasons.

You say during use "it got dusty"....

Did you try carfully cleaning the lense?

9 times out of 10 , that is the problem...

The repair guy cleaned it in July. I may try again for kicks.

The description sounds to me like to need a 'puter and some software.
When the burner dies $100 will get you a new one.

The lens isn't in a plane of focus, so probably it won't help,.....

True, but dust on the lens still reduces the amplitude of the laser
beam reaching the disc...

A friend of mine has one which is faulty (skips/jumps in record and play)
and I have just talked to HHB in the UK about it. Apparently, the leaking
capacitor is a common fault in older units. The tech said it usually
corrodes the PCB and replacement of the board is necessary. He also says
that you need to recalibrate the new PCB with the existing mech (or vice
versa). HHB in the UK charge £105 + 17.5% tax to replace the board and
recalibrate. The tech also said that the laser assembly very rarely wears
out.

See my previous post - sounds like an issue with one particular cap. I'm
having my friends one sent to me this week, if I find the cap I'll post
which one it is.

It may be my 02R...I tried an HHB Burnit Plus - when I coaxial cable
and tried to record I got a DIN UNLOCK message which means that the
digital signal was interupted. So I unpluged the coaxial cable and used
an AES cable out of the 02R to the HHB Burnit Plus...--- I switched out
coaxial cables to rule out a bad cable - I must have a problem with the
digital out....I'm going to hook-up my HHB 850CDR via the AES cable and
see if it works....

Thanks for everyone's help!

John
