Hi,
I have got an old (early 1990s) Denon CD Player (DCD-1460) wich seems to function allright but then starts to loose tracking during play. As the player plays a track it will skip back within that track, that is when playing track 3 it will skip back within track 3 only. I can not recall an occurrence that it skipped back from say track 3 to track 2; also I can't recall it skipping forward. Does anyone recognise these symptoms and is there a way to fix the problem ? I tried the service option but was advised that the laser was 'worn' - I do not rate their expertise. Thanks for your help Pieter. |

Many such problems are fixed with routine maintenance. Cleaning the lens, cleaning and relubing moving parts such as the rail(s), gears, lubing the spindle motor, etc fixes many if not most such problems. The tip-off to me is the "skipping back" which usually occurs when the sled motion is impaired. Also, some Denons do need focus and tracking gain adjustments redone to compensate for pickup and circuit aging. This is ONLY done by a technician, since it requires an external sine wave generator and filter circuit to be connected to the unit under test. Unknowledgeable attempts don't fly with these. I had similar problems with my DCD-800 (late 1980s). It would sometimes not
play certain CD's at all. It was just a matter of re-adjusting the servo electronics. It is described in the service manual and is not very hard to do. I've done it a few times. It does require some equipment like an oscilloscope. Don't remember exactly what but nothing too fancy. I used some equipment at work. The service manual is essential though as the whole procedure is described in there. Don't try it without the service manual. You need to bring the player into test mode, hook up the equipment and adjust some pots. Do you just call the manufacturer and tell them that you want to buy (I guess they don't give them away) a service manual for a certain piece of equipment? /Martin (owner of a Cambridge (says Sony under the hood) CD-player that acts up at times) |

Denon has parts distributors like Pacific Coast Parts and Tritronics. One
calls them and orders the manual, assuming it is still available. Mark Z. Call the importer/distributeur or a service centre of the brand. That's how I got mine. I recently purchased the service manual of the DVD-3910 so I can do some modifications to the audio circuits. Wasn't very expensive. You also might be able to get a service manual off the web. There are a few sites that offer them in pdf. Do a search. Menno |
