Default Speakers

I just purchased a home and had it prewired for sound.

Congratulations.

Now it is time to purchase speakers and I need some advice.

Yes.

I wouldn't know really good sound from halfway decent sound,

To know good from mediocre is easy, what is difficult is to select the
brand of mediocre that fits the audio taste and the budget.

so I don't want to go overboard.

That is a wise policy.

I suppose I want 8" - 8 ohm speakers which are all over eBay
for under $50/pair.

I haven't checked what is available there.

That's where I've set my arbitrary limit.

Your choice, but it is a narrow field.

What is 2-way?

I don't want to be impolite, but you ask on a level and with so little
information that it is very difficult to give advice, even a simple
reply would be less than simple.

What type of control do I get for volume? It is wired for that, too.

I have not got the least bit of an idea of what is meant with "house
wired for sound", because it begets the question: What sound?

Can someone send me off in the right direction?

Yes, you need a physical person to help you. So what you should do is to
ask if someone knows a suitable and well reputed advisor near your.

Rick
