Default Inexpensive Bookshelf Speakers

I have to replace the broken speakers for my Harmon Kardon 520
receiver. Unfortunately, I am on a very tight budget. The max I can
spend is $100/piece, i.e. $200/pair. The speakers will be mainly used
as the main speakers to watch movies but also listening to music once
in a while. I know $100 is not going to get me anywhere (my headphones
were considerably more expensive) but that's all I can afford right
now. Two speakers I saw are JBL E30 for $140/pair and Klipsch SB-1 for
$130/pair. Any opinions/suggestions and/or alternatives are greatly
appreciated.

Thanks

My opinion is that you get more bang for your buck with something
like these. (Some assembly required :-)

As much as I hate to recommend anything from Behringer, their passive Truth
monitors are actually pretty darn good. Especially considering they cost
only $80 each at most audio/music stores.

Gerry,

Why is that?

Behringer has a reputation in the industry for stealing designs from other
companies, and cloning them in China to sell basically the same product much
more cheaply. I have nothing against making stuff in China. But stealing a
design is a different story.

B' has an a reputation among some portions of the industry. See archives
for much flaming about this; it appears that some of these assertions
are flat-out wrong.

That's why I said "reputation" rather than accuse them directly. But I
remember when they cloned Mackie's 8-bus mixer, and the ensuing lawsuit, and
I recall a few other lawsuits.

Lawsuits, or successful lawsuits? Innocent until _PROVEN_ guilty... and
even then, a jury is sometimes wrong.

That standard is not uniform across the planet.

Yeah, no kidding. Like the multi-BILLION dollar lawsuit won against Dow for
their silicon breast implants. That was clearly a situation where junk
science - heck, ANTI-science - prevailed over logic and reason.

As for Behringer v. Mackie, I don't know if Behringer cloned the 8-bus
mixer's circuits as well as the front panel layout. But I've seen both front
panels.

Agreed.

Court decisions are clearly affected by politics, but then
unfortunately is some of currrently-accepted science. Good
thing that even science admits that its results are
provisional. There's this fine tendency for the truth to out
in the end.
