Default Onkyo receiver problem

It seems like you have a number of bad caps. I have seen this in many of the
older units that are similar to yours. I use an ESR meter to test them, and
replace all the caps that are out of specs. If you want, you can simply
replace all the caps. Considering the age of your unit, this may be a good
idea.

Ok, I got my hands on an Onkyo TX-850 receiver. The problem with it is,
it refuses to turn on/stays in standby mode. BUT if I hairdry the
electrolytic caps or leave the unit alone for about 24 hours, it will
power on normally and work fine for a few minutes.

So, is there a good chance that replacing the caps will fix the
problem?

I do have the service manual for this just in case.

Unless the caps are surface-mounted types, I'd lean towards bad solder
connections, possibly in the regulated power supply areas or involving the
microprocessor, assuming it uses one. Not to say one or more caps might not
be high ESR, for example, I'm just not thinking they are your immediate
problem.
