Default sharing a set of speakers

hey everyone.

I got a turntable for my birthday which I have to plug into a little
preamp (which is in turn plugged into a set of speakers using a
standard speaker wire input). i also have a hifi system that i use the
same speaker arrangement with. it means every time i want to play any
vinyl, i have to plug the speakers into the preamp.

there's gotta be a way to link the systems so i can run the cd player
and the turntable through a single set of speakers.. but how?

Does you "hifi system" have any external inputs?

Yeah, it has the standard red/white phono inputs in the back, as well
as the speaker wire inputs.

Apologies if I'm using naive terminology and such, the hardware aspect
is less my thing when it comes to audio.

Describe more completely your "little preamp".
Typically phono preamps have line-level outputs (the
"red/white phono" connectors) which you should be
able to plug into the inputs on your "hifi system".

Note that the term "input" and "output" refer to which
direction the signal is going. "Speaker inputs" would
make sense only when refering to the speakers themselves.
Presumably your "hifi system" has "speaker OUTputs".

How are the "red/white phono" connectors on your
"hifi system" labeled? Is there a selector switch for
what you want to listen to (like "CD, AM, FM" etc.)?

This is the device I'm using:

It has 2 mic inputs at the front, and at the back it has red/white
phono.

Actually, I fixed it myself everyone. Plugged my line out from the hifi
into the mic input on the preamp box. Sorry for wasting time, if people
feel that way.

I was going to suggest that!

The alternative solution is to get a record deck pre-amp/RIAA equaliser,
plug your record deck into it, and plug its output to your hi-fi amplifier.

Maplin sell one for £15, part QM51F
