I have a Philips CD-50 CD player that I've used for years as a
reference; it has a couple of different outputs including S/PDIF, and it's been something that I use to calibrate my ears. Now it's beginning to have problems - on the first song of a CD it will dropout and actually skip forward about 1/4 to 1/2 a second, every 5 or so seconds. Usually, it stops that behaviour before the first song ends. I opened it up, and looked for anything dirty, broken, or that looked like it may need lubrication; it was clean as a whistle. So then I began scanning the net for information, and I can't find CRAP on it. Does anyone know who I could contact? I've written Philips, but I haven't heard back from them. -- ---Mikhael... |

I think the CD-50 has a rotary servo. Put a drop of turbine oil or sewing machine oil on the top end bottom bearings of the servo. Do the same for the turntable motor. Clean the lens. If this does not fix your problems, get the service manual from Magnavox/NAP and go through the calibration procedure. Looking at the eye pattern on the scope will tell you a whole lot about the transport condition. --scott -- "C'est un Nagra. C'est suisse, et tres, tres precis." |

The optics might need cleaning but you probably won't be able to see the film of dirt. If the trouble goes away after a good cleaning, that was what it was. The simplest way to clean the exposed lens surfaces is to wipe them with with a cotton-wool bud soaked in (Isopropyl/ IPA) alcohol. The film of dirt is often greasy (from frying food or cigarette smoke) and will not respond to water-base cleaners. Another posibility is lumps of dirt on the spindle chuck throwing the disc slightly too wobbly for the focussing mechanism to keep up. Give both the chuck and counter-chuck a good cleaning. -- ~ Adrian Tuddenham ~ (Remove the ".invalid"s and add ".co.uk" to reply) www.poppyrecords.co.uk |
