i had planned on recording some vocals today for this overwhelming
project ive been working on for about 2yrs now already and still isnt close to being finished. so i start up my computer and for some reason the damn sound card isnt working. it had been, up to this point, working just fine. im using an audiophile 24/96 soundcard, on a windows XP system. i think i was mucking around with some kind of system settings, but nothing too bad, and im not totally braindead, so i dont really think that should have caused a problem. heres the situation: if i go into the device manager, the only thing i can see that seems out of place is the fact that when i go under the audiophile sound card properties, into the audio tab then the properties there, it says that the driver for the card is 'enabled but not started'. what the HELL does that mean? WHERE do i 'start' it? its enabled and everything. i cant figure this out... also, if i go into the 'sounds and audio devices' options under the control panel, it doesnt show that i have any type of sound card. it wont find the audiophile. so i cant set it as my default card for anything (recording, playback). same thing happens if i go under device settings inside cool edit pro, it wont find my sound card. the audiophile used to show up in both places now it doesn't. but the weird thing is that for some reason it WILL show up inside fruity loops. AND i get sound out of that program. why would windows itself not even find the damn thing but a single program will, and can also use it, even if windows doesnt have it set up as the default sound card?! ive tried reinstalling the drivers and that didnt do ****. this is starting to get on my nerves because instead of working on my stuff im spending all this time trying to fix the problem. any ideas (that dont involve me getting a new sound card)? thanks. tim |

Tim,
also, if i go into the 'sounds and audio devices' options under the control panel, it doesnt show that i have any type of sound card. Obviously something has gotten corrupted. Windows XP lets you "roll back" your system settings, so if this happened recently you could try that. Or if you have a proper system backup (Ghost, DriveImage) you could restore that way, as I do once a year or so. But really, your best next step is to call M-Audio tech support and ask their advice since they help people with this stuff all the time. --Ethan |
