Default Control Room Size

I'm building a new studio. The area i currently have for the control
room is 12.5 ft. x 11.5 ft.
I have a spare budget for the acoustic treatment of the room. The
ceiling is 10.8 ft. high.
This control room is going to be used for recording, mixing, and
everything else.

I have few questions:
Is there a problem with the size of the control room? Is it better to
change the ratio between the walls on account of the room size? Are
there any other tips that anyone can give me prior to building this
room?

Thanks
Yoni

Your room size is not excellent...

I suggest you to buy any book from Alton Everest....
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg...books&n=507846

The best $19.77 item you can buy is you are bulding a studio!!!

Look at the ratios of your room dimensions:

L: 12.5' = 150"
W: 11.5' = 138"
H: 10.8' = 129.6"

L:H = 150/129.6 = 1.16
W:H = 138/129.6 = 1.06

These dimensions make your room reasonably close to a cube - which from
an acoustic point of view, is a very bad.

This will mean you have room modes bunching up together to produce
boominess at the resonant frequencies of your room dimensions

Is there a problem with the size of the control room?

As it stands, I would say yes. You need to change one dimension to move
the room's dimension as far away from a cube as possible.

Personally, I think dropping the ceiling would help (but then I haven't
seen your situation)

Is it better to change the ratio between the walls on account of the room size?

Yes, or the ceiling height - which ever is more convenient

Are there any other tips that anyone can give me prior to building this
room?

As has already been suggested, get F.Alton Everest's book "The Master
Handbook of Acoustics"

Also, take a look at my Control Room Calculator spreadsheet. You can
download this from here http://www.whealy.com/acoustics/ControlRoom.html

Enter the room ratios that I calculated above into the sheet "Room
Ratios", and then enter the room's width on the "Initial Values" sheet.
Then you can play around with different surfaces for the walls, floor
and ceiling and see how it changes the room's reverberation time.

Please read the instructions on the download page carefully in order to
learn how to use the spreadsheet. Please also read Everest's book,
because this will explain the concepts and terminology of acoustics.

Regards

Chris W

Yoni,

Is there a problem with the size of the control room?

Yes. Not only is it small, it's also close to square.

Is it better to change the ratio between the walls on account of the room

size?

If the only way you can change it is to make it even smaller, you're better
off leaving it as is. You can reduce the problems a lot with substantial
bass trapping.

Are there any other tips that anyone can give me

You bet. See my Acoustics FAQ:

www.ethanwiner.com/acoustics.html

It's a fair amount to read, but it explains all of these issues in detail.
