Default Is it OK to buy an USED MONITOR

I can not spend too much on a monitor so I was wondering if I can find
some good used minitor (like on Ebay) then should I buy it or not.
Whats the general opinion on this issue?

Since you used the singular (in this era of stereo)
I assumed you were talking about a video monitor?
If you were talking about speakers, presumbly you
would have used the plural? If you mean speakers,
you may need to offer more info to narrow down
the question.

There are frequently a large number of slightly-used
(video) monitors after every summer or winter Olympics.
I bought one several years ago from B&H. Good as
new as far as I was concerned, and a good price.

And there are vendors on eBay who are good sources
of used, but good quality equipment. For example,
David Riddle.

Since this is rec.audio.pro, unlike Richard, I'll assume that you're
talking about a monitor speaker. Still, are you looking for a stage
monitor or a control room monitor?

Either way, I would be careful about buying a used loudspeaker - not to
say you should avoid it, but make sure that the deal you make allows
you to return it for a full refund if you're not satisfied with either
its condition or the sound. You should also be prepared to get stuck
with two-way shipping cost if you decide not to keep it, and for any
speaker, that can get expensive. Better to find a local seller.

You can narrow your choices down a bit by listening in a store, picking
out a few models that sound good to you and are in your price range on
the used market (if that's possible - you can't go into a shop and
listen to the speakers that were hot five years ago). Look for that
limited range of monitors for sale and don't come back here two days
before the auction closes with: "I've been looking for a pair of used
XYZ monitors and I found a set of ABC monitors on eBay at a good price.
Should I buy them?" If you've never heard the ABC monitors, don't take
the chance.

If you have a local shop that deals in used audio equipment, by all
means, go there, listen to their current stock of used speakers, and
buy what you like. You'll know that it's not broken, and the shop will
almost certainly give you a period of time to try them at home and
return them if you find that they don't work for you.

Every monitor I have ever owned was bought used.

But, you want to audition before buying, which is hard to do with Ebay.

the answer is yes. Video or audio monitor. The pitfalls of buying used gear
apply.

As long as the person you are buying from has a 98%+ feedback and at
least 50 successful sales, there shouldn't be a problem. Make sure you
read any negative feedbacks for problems such as the items being
defective when received. Oh, and don't forget the fine print on all the
auctions.

That's a good initial screening, but for something like this, I
wouldn't consider buying without having a phone conversation with the
seller if he's not local and I can't go over to look at the gear. I've
made one buy on eBay and no sales. I guess this means that as well
known as I am around these parts, you wouldn't do business with me.
That's OK.
