At first, due to my lack of experience, I was afraid to encode at 16Khz, believing that I would not be making a universally compatible MP3, since this was considered MPEG-2. Almost all players these days can handle pretty much any regular MP3 coding scheme. Watch out for mp3Pro (sounds better on players that support it, but wastes a little bandwidth getting there.). I'm personally staying with Win LAME now that I understand a little bit more. I need a very typical MP3 that can be read by any ordinary player with the file association in place. I simply can't use the 'player specific' schemes like REAL or WMA, etc... I will do *nothing* that requires the end user to download, install and use a specific piece of software. Agreed, MP3 is the least common denominator nowadays. I still think you should audition the Fraunhofer encoder. |

I don't need another 'sound recorder', I don't need another 'audio editing suite', yadda, yadda... It's editing function is terribly un user friendly. For example, you can't mark a beginning and end for a cut because every time you put the cursor down, you lose the first mark, so the only way to 'capture' a region of audio is to drag select in a single swoop and hope you're near an acceptable crossing point at the beginning and end of the section of audio. If you try to check it, the selected region disappears. I watched him work with his version of Nero and tried a few things that I'd grown accustomed to in Sound Forge, which simply weren't do-able in Nero. The tools, compressors, etc., seem to be little more than shots in the dark. Perhaps I am underestimating it, but I have plenty of audio tools of better functionality. The only thing I am in search of is an MP3 encoder capable of getting an acceptably smooth sounding playback of low baud rates. ( 40kbps) DM |

( 40kbps) In that case Nero is not for you. I personally prefer Nero over any other program to burn CD's and I just ignore the other programs. I turn them off in the startup section and make sure there is nothing in the background. Julian |

So just install the first package and buy the mp3PRO plugin as I suggested. Fuhgeddabout the other junk.
